When Obama was awakened at 6:00 a.m. on Friday to hear that he was only the third sitting president to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize, he wasn’t even sure it was the real deal.
President Theodore Roosevelt won in 1906 and President Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919.
The cash prize is $1.4 million. Senior advisor David Axelrod says his boss wants to give the money to charity in a way that promotes the ideals of peace.
President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.
