How to increase your internet connection speed
If you have Windows XP, try this. Everyone that has tried it says it works, tell us if it works too. You should be logged as Administrator (not even accounts with administrator privileges).
1. Start - Run - type gpedit.msc.
2. Expand the Local Computer Policy / Administrative Templates / Network Branch.
3. Highlight the QoS Packet Scheduler in left panel.
4. In right panel double click the Limit reservable bandwidth setting.
5. On setting tab check the Enabled item.
6. Where it says Bandwidth limit % change it to read 0.
The problem is, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for itself. Even with QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to your advantage.
To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn’t max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this “tweak” both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth. Try it and tell us if this works.

The bandwidth is only reserved so that if windows needs it it can use it. Example for sending spy data from WGA or downloading update without telling you. You want notice a speed increase unless Microsoft is spying on you…

Simply disabling the QoS packet scheduler does the same (and can also be done in Windows Home, since gpedit.msc is only in Windows XP Pro).
Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right Click your Network Adapter (Local Area Connection or Wireless Connection) -> In the General tab, Click Properties in the pop up menu -> Remove the tick from “QoS Packet Scheduler”.
Wait until windows reinstalls the packet scheduler. Possibly reboot afterwards.

I did this. My bandwidth instantly jumped. Way more than 20% too. It practically doubled.
I did bandwidth test both before and after. My top download speed before was 46 KB/s.
Now it’s 82 KB/s.
It’s not 82KB/s just “Some of the time.” It always runs at that speed. This has completely changed the way I browse, and I can enjoy “Web 2.0″ a lot more.

Neat little trick but it does not make any difference at all unless you are currently downloading a new Microsoft update, in which case it could cause some problems.

This tweak seems to have effect more by bad practice from Micro$oft than any other reason. QOS assures guaranteed minimum speed for essencial services, ie, when they need it, it shouldnt hog the bandwidth for nothing. If it was properly used in Windows, this tweak would have no effect. [By the way, i am not a linux geekazoid(tm) windows-basher. I use either for different purposes.]

I used Bandwidth Speed Test
to check my speed before and after. And it worked pretty good.

Ah, the old Windows jokes. Funny, but as usual wrong. All I know is I am an XP support specialist, have gone to Vista. (@#$%^& hardware upgrade! still was cheaper than a MAC with Leopard) and I love it. Yes, I use Mac’s aswell, but Vista’s pretty sweet.

So, I did this tweak on my Vista ultimate Box.
Before was 82kb/s. After was 75 Kb/s. ALL in Australia.
BUT, our cable network will always throttle back as more user go online here. Peak time is happening soon.
Australian Carriers/ISP’s etc charge mega $$. The costs suck. The speeds for a lot of OZ mutant users suck. Big Country, small population.
